Character
Name: Flynn
Series: Shin Megami Tensei
Timeline: Post-Kaga's death

Personality: Flynn is a silent protagonist: he has very few lines in canon, and some major traits of his (such as who he sides with when everything inevitably goes to hell) are chosen by the player. That said, there are some things that are essentially the same no matter what lines or actions the player selects. The first being: he doesn't talk much. This is noted by the NPCs as well as how rarely he's prompted to say something: he's the quiet type even without the game mechanic of 'silent protagonist' at play.

He's also noted to be decisive, and takes the leader position after doing well in the first few missions. There are very few questions he can answer by not taking a position (and he gets criticized when he does) - the rest of the time, it's one way or the other with Flynn, with no regrets. The other samurai in his group look to him when their internal squabbles leave them unable to decide which way to go, and are willing to follow his opinion and leadership. This isn't just because he's the strongest of them, but because they respect that his choices are well thought through.

He can also be a little... silly. His interactions when on the mission are serious, yes, there's no time to mess around when people's lives are on the line. But when recruiting demons he's given choices like offering a demon a dog (when he doesn't have one), throwing up on a demon who asked to be given something, announcing that he's the main character... Demons might have strange ways of logic, but Flynn's clearly indulging his own sense of humor here.

Flynn's far more comfortable around demons than most people who aren't demon summoners are. They're the way he gets by and doesn't immediately die in battle. If that means summoning demons, learning skills from demons, fusing demons into completely different demons - so be it. No matter how strange or unnatural it may seem, it's how he's going to survive, so he gets used to it. (Pokemon are like demons, right?)
Strengths/Weaknesses: STRENGTH: Samurai training. Flynn is very handy with a sword, light on his feet, and can hold his own in nearly any fight. He's learned how to pick up a gun and use it effectively, though he wouldn't be a sniper by any means. He's your guy if you need defending from a demon.

WEAKNESS: Education. By Japanese standards he wouldn't be literate, just able to make out some common signs like "Hunter's Association". By Eastern Kingdom of Mikado standards, he's from the lower class, so he doesn't need to know anything other than how to do his job... and that's not even getting started on the complete lack of books in the country. Basically, if you expect Flynn to know something not related to fighting or practical matters, you're out of luck.

STRENGTH: Practical matters. Like camping, fishing, cooking, all the things you need to survive when the cushy life isn't handed to you on a platter. (Flynn's had some trouble with fishing in the past but seriously Issachar do you need to recount childhood memories when the forest's on fire.) Flynn won't need any help getting around Johto, at least not in the camping area.

WEAKNESS: Public speaking. He'll speak his mind to his friends and negotiate with demons or humans (similar to demons but want different things) but long-winded speeches? No way.

STRENGTH: Battle-hardened. Flynn isn't afraid of anything, not even the ugliest demons or the worst threats - even when disgusted by the Reverse Hills' secret (it's spoilers but it's disgusting) Flynn is capable of fighting demons without penalty or freaking out. He's seen it all, or if he hasn't he adjusts very quickly

WEAKNESS?: He's going to be very suspicious about the no-death rule as well as the no-apocalyptic-wasteland, no-dystopia... rules. Very suspicious.

WEAKNESS: Sleeps like a log. Practically always has to get woken up by someone else.

Samples
First Person Sample: Do you really name your...

[It takes Flynn a moment to come up with the word.] Pokemon, that's right. Do you actually name them? Don't they get offended by that? I know if I ever tried to name my demons I'd get a lecture.

-Speaking of demons, could I have my Gauntlet back? No, I'm sure whoever took it wouldn't just hand it over... But does anyone else captive here know what's going on and how we can escape?

Thank you.

Third Person Sample: "Smeargle, hm."

Flynn sat on the grass, flipping through the pages on his PokeGear. It wasn't as intuitive without an A.I. like Burroughs helpfully guiding him throughout its functions, but he thought he understood at least how to access the compendium (PokeDex) now.

The Smeargle he had received on arriving turned to look at him. While Flynn couldn't understand Pokemon, and didn't have an app for communicating with them, it seemed like at least this one understood him. Possibly.

"It says here you mark your territory by using your tail like a paintbrush," said Flynn, trying to strike up half a conversation.

Smeargle picked up its tail and waved it around.

"I'll take that as a yes." Flynn scrolled through another few pages. "But do you know how to fight?"

A nod from Smeargle.

"Can you show me?" Flynn asked, hoping to at least get the basics down.

The Pokemon stared blankly at him.

"You know, like..." Flynn set down the PokeGear and picked up a large, long stick. He thrust it towards Smeargle, causing it to jump backwards on the grass, and then demonstrated a few slashes with the stick as if it were a sword. "Like that!"

Smeargle rapidly shook its head, eyeing the stick suspiciously.

"...I'm not going to actually hit you with it if you don't have any way to defend yourself," Flynn told it, sighing. "You can relax. Whatever it is I am supposed to be, I'm not that kind."

This was going to be a long... however it was that he was stuck here. Flynn missed his demons already. Even if he hadn't had to pay out the nose for this Pokemon, he'd trade it for something that could defend him, or a good sword.

...It was sort of cute, though. When it came closer again, he gave it a soft pat on the head.
